Flooding, whether it emanates from inclement weather or from residential water damage, can be very destructive.

Disaster Safety.org is encouraging homeowners to have an insurance policy that can help during flooding events. “Once you know what your risk is, you also should consider purchasing flood insurance, especially if you find you are in, or near, a high-risk flood zone (Special Flood Hazard Area). Flood insurance is provided through the federal National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and can be purchased through private insurance agents and companies. If you have a federally backed mortgage, be aware that your lender may require you to purchase flood insurance if you are in or near a high-risk flood zone.”

The office of the Queensland Chief Scientist in Australia explained how flooding can impact the lives of people who have been affected by it.

“Floods can also traumatise victims and their families for long periods of time. The loss of loved ones has deep impacts, especially on children. Displacement from one’s home, loss of property and disruption to business and social affairs can cause continuing stress. For some people the psychological impacts can be long lasting.”
