Another damage that can be created by flooding is a destruction of home fixtures. Carpets for instance are one of the first home fixtures that get damaged because of flooding. Same goes with electrical and plumbing fixtures that can be affected by flood waters. Most of these would need a major repair, or worse – a replacement.

Appliances and electronics also stand to get damaged during flooding events. Once these appliances get submerged in flood waters, chances are it will be difficult to salvage, if at all. Refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines and television sets are all expensive to repair or replace.

Mold damage can be very problematic as well, and can have a lasting effect to any home. It can affect structure as well as the general wellness of all the occupants.

Disaster Safety.org is encouraging homeowners to have an insurance policy that can help during flooding events. “Once you know what your risk is, you also should consider purchasing flood insurance, especially if you find you are in, or near, a high-risk flood zone (Special Flood Hazard Area). Flood insurance is provided through the federal National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and can be purchased through private insurance agents and companies. If you have a federally backed mortgage, be aware that your lender may require you to purchase flood insurance if you are in or near a high-risk flood zone.”
